Archicentre used the Renovation Report
format to kick-start the project. After the two architects
had a look at the properties, Archicentre sat down with
them to discuss the brief. The objective was to take two
19th Century workers' cottages and transform them into
21st Century dream homes. The original properties were
built simply, cheaply and with no regard to an outdoor
lifestyle. Our brief emphasizes sustainability, functionality
and creativity.
The brief included:
At least two good sized
bedrooms, three if possible
En suite
A large open-plan dining,
living and kitchen area opening onto outdoor living area
Off-street car parking
Passive solar design and
water saving principles
Home office or study
Universal accessibility
The Renovation Reports were completed
and presented to Archicentre a few weeks later. Included
was key information about potential costs and local building
regulations. The architects learned early on that one of
the more interesting aspects of the project would be creating
a contemporary design within an inner-city heritage area.
To conserve heritage values, any new work, they said, would
have to be concealed behind the roof-line of the original
building.
A concept design helped Archicentre
visualise the final result. Although both architects
were working within the same design envelope, they came
up with two completely different approaches to living.
T1 places the living and dining upstairs with the bedrooms
below, while T2, more traditionally, has the living and
dining downstairs with the bedrooms up above. T1 also
proposed a radical alternative: a third floor roof terrace,
which will be discussed in greater detail in Stage 3. Preparing
a Sketch Design.
