Mosman Architect Wins Mosman Environmental Design Competition

Mosman based Architect Stephen Petrie has won the competition to renovate a run-down, single storey cottage on Sydney's North Shore in Mosman which will become a national focus of an environmental architectural project being conducted by Archicentre, the building advisory service of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects.

Over thirty-one submissions and designs were received from Archicentre Architects in New South Wales.

The winning design was announced this morning by the New South Wales Government Architect Chris Johnson at an official launch.

Speaking at the launch Mr Johnson said, "The innovative project to design and build an environmental renovation to promote and showcase best practice in sustainable housing design, environmental building products and master planning of renovations is timely as it coincides with the State Government's move towards more sustainable housing."

"The importance of this showcase provides an invaluable demonstration to the public of practical features and benefits in sustainability for home owners and renovators."

Mr Johnson said that Archicentre's extensive website provides local government and the general community with an important educational vehicle in relation to encouraging good design and managing a project.

Mr David Lawrence, State Manager of Archicentre NSW and ACT said, "The brief for the architects to convert the old, run-down, traditional residence into a contemporary family home with a strong environmental sustainability focus had attracted interest from eighty-seven New South Wales Architects."

"All submissions were of a very high standard and demonstrated great creativity in diverse design solutions to the brief."

Mr Lawrence said that Archicentre is pleased to have Boral, Mosman City Council and Di Jones Real Estate as partners in this project, which will take eighteen months to complete.

"Upon the completion of construction there will be an extended open house period prior to auction. It is anticipated that the home will be sold at a profit, demonstrating to the public the financial value that can be added to their home through renovations using an architect."

According to the Judges Notes

Innovation in design and construction, as well as good planning and effective use of the site brought this design to their attention. The design consists of linking the existing but renovated cottage with a new addition via open courtyards.

On the ground floor, bedrooms two and three and a flexible lounge and dining area would be separate from the main living area and kitchen area at the rear, which are angled towards the northern aspect and views. On the first floor, the master suite would enjoy privacy from the sitting room and versatile study or bedroom four. An interesting feature of this design is that the rear component would be factory built and then assembled on site.

In developing the design, Stephen says he "decided to treat the building as two separate but linked components or pavilions to exploit the positive and eliminate the negative factors".
