The Terraces 6 April 2005
A demonstration of the Victorian Governments' 2030 planning program by Archicentre will go under the hammer this weekend in Carlton.
Mr Robert Caulfield, Managing Director of Archicentre said: "One of the historic Terraces in Elgin Street which had been totally rebuilt except for the historic facade will be auctioned at 1.30pm on Saturday 9 April 2005."
Mr Caulfield said, "the $1.4 million project had been recorded on the Internet from start to finish and revealed all of the issues and challenges people have in renovating a terrace house in an historic area."
"The auction on Saturday will be a test for the renovation market in Melbourne and we like other renovators have faced cost blow outs and delays."
Mr Caulfield said the demonstration project is a reflection of the intent of the 2030 planning strategy which was to ensure the best use of land and the return of vacant buildings to use. In the case of The Terraces we have turned two small historic worker's cottages into modern family homes.
