Archicentre, the building advisory service of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects, today said many new home buyers are failing to maximise the potential savings by wiring their new homes for automation.
Archicentre will demonstrate the latest in home technology and automation wiring at the Mosman Green project this morning.
Smart wiring infrastructure can cost as little as 10% more than a conventional wiring installation, when included at the design and construction phase of a project. If the wiring is in place you will have the flexibility to add home automation, data and audio later.

Mr David Lawrence, State Manager of Archicentre NSW & ACT said: "Wiring the home at the construction stage means that you are not committed to outlaying for the whole system but have prepared the home for future automation needs. "Home automation is common place in prestigious properties and is expected by many consumers." Mr Lawrence said that if you do not attend to infrastructure at the construction phase it can cost a lot more after the property has been built to feed the wires into the structure. "It is likely that installation options and flexibility will be compromised due to the inaccessibility of wall cavities and other spaces where wire and cable is traditionally installed." Typically a full home automation system consisting of data, audiovisual and automation can cost from $5,000 up depending on the size of the home and the system options selected. |
Full installations provide beautiful lighting control, security and energy efficient control over other household systems like air-conditioning, sub floor heating, garage doors and the like. Control options include electronic keypads, colour touch screens, sensors, timers, remote controls, telephones and the Internet.
"Research recently released showed the vast majority of the community had little understanding of home automation".
The term 'home automation' refers to a computer based system that allows you to program how various functions such as lighting, security, audio, telephone, computing and television operate.
This can lead to energy savings, a higher level of security and greater flexibility within the home for communications, both internally and with the outside world.
The Mosman Green demonstration will feature the design of the installation, how the control of the automation occurs and the types of functions able to be programmed.
Mosman Green is a renovation project in partnership with Boral. Home automation technology systems at Mosman Green are supplied by HPM www.hpmtech.com.au and installed by Inhome Automation inhomeautomation@bigpond.com
