Climate Change Industry Major Opportunity For Australia

Archicentre, the building advisory service of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects today said the urgency of climate change should see the Federal Government implement policies to encourage the building of a strong manufacturing industry in climate change products for domestic and commercial use.

The organization said, failure to accelerate a climate change industry would see Australia's opportunities on the world stage as a leader in climate change diminish but strong political leadership at both a federal and state level could see Australia take the Climate Change Hat Trick.

1. The creation of a strong manufacturing industry.

2. Be able to reduce greenhouse gas with local products and policies

3. Become a leader on the world stage of Climate Change

With over 100,000 litres of water falling on the roof of the average home and enough solar energy to power a house five times over also available, the major challenge for all Federal and State Governments is to fund Roof Research and mass market energy and water saving products.

Robert Caulfield, Managing Director of Archicentre said, "it is impractical for any Government to regulate the size of houses by planning regulations as people are generally wanting more space inside their homes with a trend to replace the large backyard with carefully planned courtyards that are linked to indoor areas by deck areas.

"The current severe water crisis in Australia is also supporting this trend as people move to limit their use of water and also move towards more leisure time, rather cutting a large lawn or weeding the garden.

Mr Caulfield said that we believe Governments should also be investing in solar powered air conditioner research to make a major contribution to lowering Australia's greenhouse gas emissions by diverting some of the funds that are being used to provide massive solar subsidies to home owners whose properties can be valued at being in excess of a million dollars.

"With increasing temperatures due to climate change Australia needs to be implementing a solar powered air conditioning strategy nationally with the latest existing technology and new technology yet to be developed.

"Energy authorities have been warning for years that the explosion of power hungry air conditioners in Australia threatens the stability of the electrical grid during peak power demands in summer. When this demand is at its highest, potential solar energy supply is also at its highest level. This is a natural association and should be a key strategy."

"Our energy and climate problems are a clear and present danger and all of the Government funded agencies dealing with the issues of the greenhouse should be coming forward with a plan to develop solar powered air conditioners."
