What is a Shade Audit?
A Shade Audit is a process whereby ultra-violet (UV) radiation risks in outdoor activities areas such as playgrounds are determined and solutions proposed to minimise them. The Shade Audit process adopted by Archicentre has been developed and approved by the New South Wales Cancer Council.
Why do we need Shade Audits?
Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. About one in two people who grow up here will develop some form of skin cancer, and more than 1,600 Australians die each year of melanoma, the severest form of skin cancer. The major cause of skin cancer, which is almost totally a preventable disease, is exposure to UV radiation from the sun. In particular, children’s skin is extremely sensitive and will burn in less than 12 minutes during the peak summer period.
Who needs a Shade Audit?
Providers of outdoor recreational spaces such as schools and childcare centre have a general duty of care to provide sun safe environments for patrons and employees. The Archicentre Shade Audit service assists organisations to meet their legal responsibilities by identifying the risks of over exposure to UV radiation and making recommendations as to how best to manage them. Importantly, the Shade Audit ensures that organisations only construct shade that is really necessary and effective. Usually, many of the shade improvements are achieved at little or no cost.
