Winning Design of the new Seaford Life Saving Club
by Robert Simeoni Architects

The winning design of the new Seaford Life Saving Club was officially announced on 22 April 2005 by the Police and Emergency Services Minister Tim Holding.

The winning design by Robert Simeoni Architects is an innovative timber design, incorporating pavilions and boardwalks.

Robert Simeoni Pty Ltd Architects was previously awarded both a Victorian RAIA Award for Architecture and a National Commendation for "Woolamai House", on a sensitive coastal site at Cape Woolamai, Phillip Island.

Architect Robert Simeoni said his firm's clubhouse design created a strong visual and physical connection with the Seaford pier, which forms a pivotal element in the design idiom, the beach as well as the retail strip across Nepean Highway.

The building is a number of functional pavilions connected by timber boardwalks. It sits lightly on the dune, well beneath the established banksia canopy, on a series of screw pile footings which allow the building to be prefabricated off site, minimising disturbance to the fragile environment as well as providing flexibility for future natural changes to the dune profile.

The strong horizontal elements provide sunshading, security, sunlight control, ventilation as well as a sense of transparency, Mr Simeoni said. “The overall scheme provided for a considerable degree of design flexibility to suit the community’s current and future needs.”

Work is expected to be completed for the 2006-2007 summer season.

A public exhibition of all the competition entries will be held from Thursday 12 May to Tuesday 6 June at Archicentre, 530 Glenferrie Rd Hawthorn, 3122
